Application Overview

As roads and highways continue to be built and traffic loads increase, it becomes vital for all those using the roads and highways to get to their destination in the safest and most efficient way. The Korenix JetBox 9300 series of embedded communications systems are the ideal platform to use as a controller creating remote communication for the monitoring of traffic and environmental conditions from the traffic command centre, and communicating with motorists.

Whether monitoring fog, ice or fires - the JetBox 9300 has suitable interfaces to access these devices remotely, and at the same time supports embedded Linux software that adds intelligence to the system. For visual monitoring of traffic flow there are Ethernet and power over Ethernet ports to connect to IP surveillance systems. The JetBox 9300 supports Linux and can be customized to act as an intelligent controller, implementing rules and conditions for signage output, act as a serial protocol gateway for interfacing to different models of variable message signs, and as central point of communications including primary connection to the WAN and redundant links to secondary communications networks such as 3G/GSM/GPRS.

JetBox 9300 provides the flexibility, scalability and reliability essential to monitor traffic and communicate with motorists on modern roads and highways.

Design Considerations

• Ruggedised industrial design, wide operating temperature, fanless, dustproof and DIN rail mountable suitable for installation in a roadside cabinet.
• Intelligent platform, can act as a serial protocol gateway to interface to different manufacturers’ Variable message signs, can monitor environmental conditions and output messages and alerts as required, can monitor of WAN links and switch to redundant link if required.
• Redundant link to 3G/GSM/GPRS network
• Ethernet and/or Power over Ethernet interfaces for addition of IP surveillance to system
• Suitable interfaces to connect to wide area network, which in this case might be leased lines, metro Ethernet service, SDH/Sonet service
